VELÁZQUEZ (Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez, Painter) (1599-1660)

Diego Velázquez, Spanish Court painter, known as "the painter's painter" because of his ability and skill in merging and harmonizing all aspects of color, light, space, line and mass, fixing, in a few sure strokes, the essential features of the subject matter.

Velázquez was Court painter in Madrid under Philip IV, his paintings included portraits of Court Notables, landscapes, mythological and religious subjects together with scenes from common life. In addition to being Court Painter Velázquez was also responsible appointed Marshal of the Royal Household and as such was responsible for organizing and planning ceremonies.
